What Are Dental Crowns?

As long as there have been humans, there have been tooth issues. No matter how careful you are with your teeth, accidents happen. You can crack, chip, or even break one of your teeth on a piece of hard candy, for example.

While accidents to your body will happen, when trauma occurs in your mouth, it can cause further damage if you do not take care of it right away. Tooth crowns work to cover and protect your teeth from further damage.

Crowns can also work to cover and protect your teeth from damage from tooth decay as well. If you have a serious cavity that takes up a good deal of your tooth space, you are more likely to further damage your tooth. Your tooth is also at risk for a further tooth infection, which could potentially affect other teeth, your gums, or even your jawbone. By covering the cavity, a dental crown keeps your tooth from becoming re-infected.

Types of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are not one-size-fits-all. You can choose the dental crown you think will be best for you, and our dentist can create a crown for your specific tooth.

Porcelain Crowns

Because porcelain is made from ceramic, it has the perfect texture and shine as your natural teeth. It also has to be resistant to moisture and bacteria and tough enough to go through decades of chewing and grinding food. Porcelain can accomplish all of those goals. Our dentist can choose between making you a porcelain-only crown or porcelain that covers a metal cap to comprise the crown. Most porcelain crowns last their owners up to 20 years and beyond.

Metal Crowns

Metal crowns are the oldest type of crown available. Metal crowns have been discovered on skeletons that are thousands of years old. Metal crowns are very durable, and they can last for decades on your teeth. There are a couple of negatives if you choose a metal crown for your diseased or damaged tooth. First, metal crowns can be quite expensive, depending on the type of metal used. Second, many people would prefer that others not be able to see the crown, but metal crowns are visible to everyone.

Composite Crowns

Composite crowns may be better for fixing your tooth issues. They can cover and protect your teeth for a decade or better. Composite crowns are made from a combination of materials, including acrylic, plastic, and glass. They are less expensive than porcelain or metal crowns, but they are not as durable and long-lasting.

What Is the Dental Crown Procedure?

It may sound complicated to have a crown placed over one of your teeth, but the procedure to place a crown is not complicated at all. First, you may have a procedure before our dentist can place your crown. For example, if you have a broken tooth because you were crunching ice and you bit down too hard, your crown procedure might begin shortly after you get to our office.

If you have a severe cavity in a tooth, our dentist may need to remove the cavity and treat any infection first using a root canal procedure before proceeding with a crown fitting.

Once your mouth is ready, our dentist makes a mold of your tooth so that a permanent crown can be made. You may need to have a bit of your existing tooth ground down to prepare for your new crown. Once your tooth has been prepared, our dentist places a temporary crown on it while your new tooth is in production.

As soon as your new tooth is ready, you will return to our office. Our dentist removes the temporary crown and cements your brand-new crown in its place. The dentist will then do a bite check to make sure your crown is in the perfect position. Finally, you will have a tooth that is free from disease or trauma.

How Should I Take Care of My Crown?

Once you have a dental crown you are taking care of, you need to remember that just because your crown is meant to stand up and take some punishment, it is not indestructible. Here are some ways you can make your crown last for years.

First, be sure that you are brushing and flossing your crown in the same way you do your other teeth. Second, check your toothbrush. If you are using a hard, abrasive toothbrush, you may be damaging your crown as well as the rest of your teeth. Choose a soft-bristled brush instead. Check that your toothpaste is non-abrasive as well.

Once you have a crown in place, be careful what kind of food you put in your mouth. Avoid cracking nuts or hard candy on the crown. You will also need to steer away from any sticky food, such as caramel or gum, because these substances are difficult to get off natural teeth, much less a crown.

If you have problems with your tooth after getting a crown, call our office. For example, if you feel discomfort after your crown is placed, let us know. Sometimes, crowns need to be adjusted because the bite pattern is not exact. After an adjustment from our dentist, you and your crown should be back to a normal, pain-free existence.
